Oscar nominations announced

The American Academy of Motion Picture Sciences and Arts has announced the nominees for the 96th Academy Awards. The leader among them was Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, nominated for awards in 13 categories, including Best Picture and Best Director. Second place went to Yorgos Lanthimos’s The Lost Lost, with eleven nominations, and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, with ten nominations, took third place. Comments Julia Shagelman.

The confrontation between Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, which has unfolded since their simultaneous release in July 2023, can be considered almost over. And if in terms of box office receipts the plastic blonde in pink won an unconditional victory – “Barbie” took first place in the world box office, earning $1.4 billion, and “Oppenheimer” is only third with $952 million—then the biopic directed by Christopher Nolan, directed by Christopher Nolan, is leading the way in the prestigious award field, the biopic of the father of the atomic bomb. “Barbie,” with eight nominations, did not even make it into the top three favorites of the Film Academy.

The main surprise that academicians presented to award season experts and the general public was the absence of Greta Gerwig in the director’s nomination.

The place that was almost automatically assigned to her was taken by another female director: the Frenchwoman Justine Trieu with a legal drama “Anatomy of a Fall”, which received the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival last year. Another rather unexpected name in this category is Jonathan Glaser with his chilling picture about the private life of the Auschwitz commandant, “Zone of Interest.”

Yorgos Lanthimos (“Poor Unfortunate”) and Martin Scorsese (“Killers of the Flower Moon”). The latter, at 81, has become the leader among living directors in the number of Oscar nominations: this has already happened to him ten times, and to Steven Spielberg only nine. Scorsese won only once, with the film “The Departed” (2006), and this year he does not have many chances to change this statistics: Nolan is considered the main favorite in the director’s nomination, although perhaps the academics will still wake up to their conscience.

Five nominations “Zones of Interest” You can also sign up for surprises from the Film Academy. The film, shot by a Briton in German, was not only among the contenders in the category “Best Foreign Film” (together with the Italian film “I Am Captain”, the Spanish “Society of Snow”, the German “Teacher’s Room” and “Perfect Days” of Japanese-German production)but also won a place in the main nomination – “Best movie”. All the heavyweights came together here: “Oppenheimer,” “The Poor Miserables,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Barbie,” as well as Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” Alexander Payne’s “The Leftovers,” Cord Jefferson’s “American Fiction,” “Anatomy of a Fall” and Celine’s modest directorial debut Dream “Past Lives”which has only two nominations.

Already less, but still the academicians surprised with their choice in the acting categories.

They did not honor Margot Robbie, who played the main role in “Barbie,” but nominated her co-star America Ferrera for supporting actress.

And besides, following the Actors Guild, Leonardo DiCaprio’s work in Killers of the Flower Moon was ignored (which is not so unexpected, since almost the same people vote from the guild and the actors’ wing of the Film Academy). But his on-screen partners have been nominated for an Oscar Lily Gladstonewho became the first Native American woman to be nominated in the category “Best Actress”and Robert De Niro.

The leader here is again “Oppenheimer”, from which three performers have been nominated: Cillian Murphy for the leading male role, and Robert Downey Jr. and Emily Blunt for supporting roles. Two acting awards, in addition to Killers of the Flower Moon, can be received “Barbie” (the second, predictably, for Ryan Gosling for Supporting Actor), “The Miserables” (for Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo), “The Leftovers” (for Paul Giamatti and Davaine Joy Randolph), “American Fiction” (for Jeffrey Wright and Sterling K. Brown), “Maestro” (for Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan) and “Diana Naked” (for Annette Bening and Jodie Foster, burst into the awards race with nominations from the Actors Guild). The Film Academy also noted Colman Domingo (“Rustin”), Sandra Hueller (“Anatomy of a Fall”) and Danielle Brooks (“The Color Purple”) in the categories “Best Actor”, “Best Actress” and “Best Supporting Actress” respectively.

The Oscars will be presented on March 10. The event will be hosted for the fourth time by popular showman Jimmy Kimmel, seasoned at the 2017, 2018 and 2023 ceremonies. In them, he saw both confusion with envelopes and slaps on stage, so now he is not afraid of anything.
