“The bill introduces the need to use inscriptions in Russian on signs and shop windows,” Sergei Altukhov told Kommersant. “It’s probably hard not to agree that the space of the national language forms national identity. My colleagues Alexander Khinshtein and Elena Yampolskaya (and a number of other ER deputies— “Ъ”) introduced a law to combat aggressive anglicisms on signs, which caused a new wave of accusations of isolationism and heated public debate. But our reality is structured in such a way that people see signs, advertising and commercial texts more often than they read Dostoevsky and Tolstoy. Whether we like it or not, they also set the standard of language and the culture of speech.”
Sergei Altukhov believes that “Western languages should stop being perceived as alphabets of social superiority, which has been going on since Soviet times and, in fact, remains now.” “Some developers name all their residential complexes only in English, because it sells better: where there is a level, there is a high level,” the deputy believes.
The authors of the bill insist on the mandatory use of the Russian language in “commercial designations” and on limiting the use of foreign words in “information for public information to consumers” unless we are talking about trademarks. The authors of the document believe that with its adoption, storefronts and signs will get rid of “such inscriptions as coffee, fresh, sale, shop, open”, they will be replaced by Russian-language analogues. Let us remind you that the current legislation allows the use of foreign words if they are provided with footnotes in Russian of the same size, and the amendments do not change this order.
