The United Automobile Workers (UAW) announced that it had reached a preliminary agreement with the Stellantis automaker. agreements on increasing wages and improving working conditions for workers at the concern’s factories. Thus, the only company from the three largest American automakers with which the UAW has not yet been able to reach an agreement remains General Motors.
The terms of the agreement with Stellantis are close to those that the unions reached last week with Ford Motor executives. Workers’ basic wages will be increased by 25% in stages until April 2028. The new labor contract will begin with a salary increase of 11%. Taking into account additional payments and the rising cost of living, the salary increase will be 33%. The agreement also includes other changes. In addition, Stellantis is committing to reopen its Illinois plant, which was closed eight months ago with the layoff of 1,200 workers, and to build a battery manufacturing facility adjacent to the plant. The agreements with Ford Motor and Stellantis still must be approved by UAW workers.
Meanwhile, the union announced an extension of the General Motors workers’ strike to the Spring Hill engine plant. The operation of nine other plants of the company depends on it.
