State Duma deputy from the United Russia party Sergei Sokol withdrew his candidacy from the election of the head of Khakassia due to health problems. Mr. Sokol was admitted to the hospital due to complications from the operation.
“I made a difficult but honest decision to withdraw my candidacy from the election of the head of the republic. The team and the family were supportive,” Sergei Sokol wrote in his Telegram channel.
Mr. Sokol added that he is now in the hospital due to complications after the operation performed in July. “Today, doctors, unfortunately, are categorical: getting out of bed means getting even more severe complications,” he wrote.

Sergei Sokol is a candidate for governor of Khakassia from the United Russia party, the main competitor of the incumbent governor, Valentin Konovalov, a candidate from the Communist Party of the Russian Federation. According to the sociological center INSOMAR, the candidates from United Russia and the Communist Party of the Russian Federation have almost the same rating: 41% of voters were ready to vote for Sergei Sokol, and 40% for Valentin Konovalov. Elections in the republic will be held on a single voting day on September 10.
In the fall of 2022, Sergei Sokol volunteered to fight in Ukraine as part of the BARS unit. After returning in April, he announced his desire to run for governor of Khakassia from United Russia.
