“United Russia” nominated the current head of the city, Sergei Sobyanin, as a candidate for mayor of Moscow. First, Sobyanin met with the primary branches of United Russia, after which a resolution was supported to nominate Sobyanin as a candidate for mayor. And then the conference of the regional branch of United Russia nominated him as a candidate for the election of the mayor of the capital. In fact, his formal opponent was the secretary of the Moscow regional branch, the vice-speaker of the State Duma, Pyotr Tolstoy. United Russia unanimously supported the nomination of Sobyanin for the election of the mayor of Moscow. All 275 delegates voted for his candidacy.
Sobyanin ran for mayor for the first time, running from United Russia. Sobyanin ran for the 2013 and 2018 elections as a self-nominated candidate. However, in the elections to the State Duma in 2021, Sobyanin headed the party list in Moscow.
The mayor’s rivals in this campaign will be Moscow City Duma deputy Leonid Zyuganov (KPRF), State Duma deputy Dmitry Gusev (A Just Russia), State Duma vice speaker Vladislav Davankov (New People), State Duma vice speaker Boris Chernyshov (LDPR). However, these parties have not yet held a conference of regional branches to nominate candidates for mayor.
The Moscow City Duma scheduled elections on June 7. They will last three days – from 8 to 10 September. Remote electronic voting will be used in the mayoral elections.
