Belgrade will never agree to Kosovo’s membership in the UN and will not recognize its independence, Petar Petkovic, head of the office for Kosovo and Metohija under the Serbian government, said. writes Serbian agency Tanjug.
“Our red lines are that Belgrade will never agree to the so-called Kosovo becoming a member of the UN, and that Belgrade will neither de facto nor de jure recognize the so-called Kosovo. We can discuss everything else that was agreed in the annex, and also consider how we will implement it,” said Petkovic.
On March 10, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic also said that Belgrade would not support Kosovo’s membership in the UN, its independence, and would not sign a “surrender”. “People should know that it would not occur to me to sign the surrender of Serbia. No one should tell me what the plan is, I know it better than they do,” the president said at the time.
On February 2, Vučić spoke about threats from the West because of the abandonment of the plan to resolve the conflict between Serbia and Kosovo. The President said that Serbia’s entry into the Union is very important, despite the low support for this decision by Serbian citizens.
On February 27, the European External Action Service (EEAS) published an agreement on the path towards the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia. According to it, the mutual recognition of passports, the exchange of diplomatic missions, the termination of Serbia’s representation of Kosovo on the world stage and the legal obligations of the parties to work on the normalization of relations are introduced.
