FT: Serbia will buy 12 fighters from France instead of Russia

Serbia has expressed its readiness to purchase 12 Rafale fighter jets from France for 3 billion euros. It would be the country’s biggest deal in decades and a symbol of Belgrade’s commitment to the West. This was reported by the Financial Times (FT), citing a source in the Serbian Ministry of Defense.

It is noted that the deal has already been agreed upon by more than 90%. The parties still have to reach agreement on financial details. According to a source in the Serbian defense ministry, the SVO launched by Russia has accelerated the process of diversifying arms purchases in the country.

“We relied on Soviet developments, and we have some problems associated with the need to maintain this equipment,” the source explained.

According to him, “due to geopolitical circumstances” Belgrade cannot purchase anything from Moscow.
