Sentence to Sergei Furgal will be announced on February 10

The verdict to the former governor of the Khabarovsk Territory, Sergei Furgal, will be announced at 12:00 Moscow time on February 10, transmits TASS with reference to the Lyubertsy Court of the Moscow Region, in which the case is being considered.

During today’s meeting, the state prosecution, based on the decision of the jury asked the court to sentence Furgal to 23 years in a strict regime colony. February 2 jurors recognizedthat the guilt of the former governor in all three episodes was proven, so he does not deserve leniency.

Furgal, who had been governor since 2018, was detained on the night of July 9, 2020 in Khabarovsk and taken to Moscow. Since that time, he has been held in custody in the Lefortovo pre-trial detention center. President Vladimir Putin soon after the arrest signed a decree on the resignation of the head of the region in connection with the loss of confidence.

In addition to Furgal, Marat Kadyrov, Andrey Paley and Andrey Karepov are also involved in this case. The prosecutor requested 10.5 years, 17 years and 22 years for them, respectively.

According to investigators, in 2004-2005. Furgal, who at that time was engaged in the business of collecting and reselling scrap metal in Khabarovsk, organized a criminal group whose members killed businessman Yevgeny Zorya and a former business partner of the ex-head of the Khabarovsk Territory Oleg Bulatov. Members of the group, according to the ICR, also attempted to kill businessman Alexander Smolsky. Investigators believe that the motive for the crimes is “promoting the commercial interests of Furgal and his accomplices.” The direct organizer of the murders and assassination attempt, according to investigators, was Karepov, who, after Furgal was elected to the State Duma in 2007, worked as his assistant. The performers are called Paley and Kadyrov.
