Senator Gibatdinov proposed to the State Duma to reduce the working week to 39 hours

Senator from the Ulyanovsk region Airat Gibatdinov introduced a bill to the State Duma to reduce the working week from 40 to 39 hours. As stated in the explanatory note to the project, the law will officially establish a shortened working day on Friday or before a holiday.

“It is necessary to lower the general maximum limit for the length of the working week, reducing it from 40 to 39 hours, for this it is proposed: in Part 2 of Article 91 of the Labor Code, the words “exceed 40 hours per week” should be replaced with the words: “exceed 39 hours per week”,”— stated in the materials for the bill in the electronic database State Duma.

In an explanatory note, the senator explained that the initiative is related to processing. Many employers, as stated in the document, are increasing production without expanding staff or additional payments. The framework of the 40-hour schedule was “more strongly erased” by the pandemic and the active transition to remote work.

Reducing the length of the working week by one hour, as explained in the documents accompanying the bill, will “reduce the excessive burden on the able-bodied employed population” and “additionally create new jobs.” In the explanatory note, the senator mentions that the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Russia in 2019 proposed introducing a four-day working week, and in 2023 its representatives supported the idea of ​​reducing it to 36 hours.
