Council of Europe Secretary General Maria Pejcinovic-Buric called on Russia to comply with the rulings of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), follows from a letter sent by the Council of Europe to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Larov.
“Currently, information is expected on the payment of fair compensation in 1874 cases. As of November 8, 2022, the debt amounted to more than 2 billion euros,” — says in a post on the CE website.
The Council of Europe also noted that Russia, despite being expelled from the organization in March, is still obliged to comply with the rulings of the European Court regarding its actions and inaction, which took place before September 16, 2022.
Since September 16, Russia has ceased to be a party to the European Convention on Human Rights and has withdrawn from the jurisdiction of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). The court issued such a resolution in March after the termination of Russia’s membership in the Council of Europe. The Russian Foreign Ministry said that the countries of NATO and the European Union are consistently turning the Council of Europe into an “instrument of anti-Russian policy” and refusing an equal dialogue.
Russia became a member of the Council of Europe in 1996. On February 25 this year, the organization decided to restrict Russia’s rights due to a special military operation in Ukraine. The council clarified that they do not exclude Russia and that it will remain a member of the organization and a party to its conventions, including the European Convention on Human Rights, but its powers will be curtailed. Such measures were called temporary in the Council and stressed that he would still have channels for communication with Moscow.
