Over the year, the share of search traffic in Russia through Google decreased by 9 p.p. and at the end of July 2023 is 39% (in July 2022 this figure was 48.6%), report “News” with a link to StatCounter.
If last summer Google was the leader in Russian search, now it is far behind Yandex — in July, the share of the Russian search engine was almost 60%, according to Statcounter data. In addition, in July, the share of Chrome in Internet visits in the Russian Federation decreased to 45%, which is 5 p.p. less than a year earlier. At the same time, the share of Yandex Browser increased by almost 5 p.p., to 25.8%.
A source of Izvestia, close to one of the domestic digital companies, explained the distrust of users in Google Chrome by the fact that the number of vulnerabilities to hacker attacks has now increased in the browser. According to another interlocutor, the reason for this trend may be Google’s refusal to support Windows 7, 8 and 8.1.
Anton Gorelkin, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, doubts that Yandex products will soon be able to further reduce the gap with Google services and bypass them in terms of traffic. “On phones and tablets, it is difficult for the browser from Yandex to compete with native solutions. In addition, it is obvious that the law on the mandatory pre-installation of domestic software does not work well in the context of parallel imports. Therefore, it is not worth counting on a sharp increase in the popularity of Yandex Browser and other alternative solutions until the Russian market begins to be saturated with devices based on domestic operating systems, ”the parliamentarian wrote in his Telegram channel.
