Too high and too low levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol are associated with an increased risk of dementia in older adults, scientists from Boston University reported.
Scientists studied information about 184 thousand people, whose average age was 70 years. People with the highest levels of HDL were 15 percent more likely to develop dementia than those with average levels, and those with the lowest levels were 7 percent more likely.
The effect of good cholesterol on dementia was significantly greater than that of bad cholesterol.
The scientists reported on their work in the journal Neurology.
