Media: Scholz uses 19th-century pneumatic mail due to fear of Russian hackers
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, in the age of messengers and emails, uses pneumatic mail from the 19th century, German media write.
Such devices were introduced back in the century before last during the time of the German Empire and the Kaisers. The system of capsules and compressed air pipes at the Federal Chancellor’s office consists of 36 stations, the operation of which costs 15,000 euros per year. Every month about 1000 letters are sent by pneumatic mail.
According to the Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper, Scholz vetoed the end of pneumatic mail (which was supposed to happen by 2025) due to fear of Russian hackers.
