German Chancellor Olaf Scholz confirmed his decision to refuse the supply of long-range Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine and not to send the German military to this territory.
“As head of government, I am responsible for matters of peace, war and security in Europe, and this includes the decision on the Taurus. In addition to supporting Ukraine, it is important for me to prevent the escalation of the conflict, that is, to avoid a clash between Russia and NATO,” he said in an interview with the newspaper Märkische Allgemeine Zeitung.
“We will not send our military personnel to Ukraine. Every time we deliver a weapon, we carefully analyze its context. My position is based on this,” Scholz emphasized.
He also noted that Germany provides Ukraine with significant support in the form of weapons and ammunition, surpassing that of any other European country. “We are allocating more than 28 billion euros for this, which is more than the amount of aid from many other countries combined. We will continue to help as long as needed,” Scholz emphasized.
Previously, the German Chancellor has repeatedly rejected the possibility of sending Taurus missiles to Ukraine, pointing out the need for the participation of the German military to effectively use these weapons. His position has drawn criticism from the opposition in Germany and some European countries, including Britain and France.
