There is no unity in Germany regarding the supply of weapons to Ukraine and sanctions against Russia, said German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
“Yes, there are some – and we are in a democracy – who are not so sure that it is really a good idea to impose all these sanctions and supply all this many weapons to Ukraine. But even most of these people eventually recognize that the government needs to make responsible decisions, ”said Scholz (quote according to RIA Novosti).
According to him, supporters of these measures are forced to admit that such decisions are made collectively at the level of the commonwealth of partners.
The head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, said earlier that he “does not understand” those who wish to stop the supply of weapons to Kyiv in order to achieve peace. He urged such people to understand that the cessation of supplies allegedly will not lead to an end to the conflict.
On January 25, Germany and the United States announced the delivery of 14 Leopard 2 tanks and 31 M1 Abrams tanks to Kyiv, respectively. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius specified that the first German military equipment would arrive in Ukraine in late March or early April. Poland, Finland, Norway, Portugal, Spain and the Netherlands also announced plans to transfer tanks to Kyiv. In addition, Great Britain is going to send its Challenger 2 to Ukraine.
The Russian authorities have repeatedly criticized the supply of Western weapons to Kyiv. In particular, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, warned that pumping Ukraine with weapons brings NATO closer to the dangerous line of a direct military clash with Russia.
