German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was alarmed by information about the investigation into corruption in the European Parliament, German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said.
Noting that the chancellor had taken note of the relevant reports, albeit with expected alarm, Hebestreit, probably relaying Scholz’s words, stressed that it was necessary to wait for further developments in the situation.
Earlier, the Belgian authorities carried out arrests and searches in Brussels. In particular, the Deputy President of the European Parliament, Eva Kaili, was detained. The ongoing investigation is linked to suspicions of corruption in the European Parliament related to the World Cup in Qatar.
Speaking about Scholz’s reaction, Hebestreit, in particular, said: “There should be no premature assessments of the situation, these reports should be confirmed, the accusations are very serious. In any case, they will be discussed at the level of the EU Parliament, and not at the level of individual states.”
