The mayor of Sumy and the director of the city infrastructure department were detained for accepting a bribe in the amount of 1.4 million hryvnia ($38,096 at the exchange rate as of October 2). This was reported in the Telegram channel of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).

“Officials demanded bribes from local entrepreneurs for unhindered business in the city. It is documented that they “taxed” a local waste removal company. The defendants demanded 2.13 million hryvnia from the entrepreneur,” the SBU clarified.

According to the department, the mayor and the head of the infrastructure department threatened with artificial obstacles in doing business if they refused to pay the “tribute.” The preventive measure for officials will be determined later, the SBU added.

Open sources report that the mayor of Sumy since 2014 is Alexander Lysenko. The position of head of the city infrastructure department is occupied by Alexander Zhurba.

Earlier, the SBU reported that Ukrainian businessman Igor Kolomoisky was charged with fraud and illegal withdrawal of funds. According to investigators, he withdrew more than 500 million hryvnia ($13.6 million) abroad over seven years.
