Saudi Arabia says friendship with Israel is possible
Just weeks before Hamas launched its attack on Israel on October 7, Saudi Arabia said it was moving closer to normalizing diplomatic relations with the Jewish state. Despite three months of war that has left more than 23,000 Palestinians dead and the Arab world in turmoil, Riyadh is signaling recognition of Israel may still be on the agenda.
During the latest shuttle diplomacy tour of the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia and Israel, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said last week that normalization talks were ongoing and “there is a clear interest in the region to continue them.”
Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince says normalization deal with Israel is getting “closer” every day
In an interview with the BBC on Tuesday, Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the UK said “there is interest” in normalizing relations. “There has been interest since 1982,” Prince Khalid bin Bandar said.
But experts say the price Saudi Arabia will demand in exchange for normalization will now be higher than before the Gaza war, as Riyadh may feel forced to extract more concessions from the United States and Israel, writes CNN.
