Sarkozy’s idea of a new referendum considered inappropriate in Crimea

The representative of the Crimean interethnic mission Zaur Smirnov criticized the proposal of ex-President of France Nicolas Sarkozy to hold a second referendum in Crimea on joining the Russian Federation under the supervision of the international community.
“No confirmations defining the Russian status of the peninsula are absolutely required, they are inappropriate. Crimeans do not need this at all,” he said.
At the same time, Smirnov welcomed Sarkozy’s recognition that Crimea is historically Russian territory.
