Samvel Shahramanyan elected president of Nagorno-Karabakh

Samvel Shahramanyan was elected president of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR), Armenpress reports. In this post, he will replace Arayik Harutyunyan, who has headed the republic since 2020 and at the end of August announced resignation.
Shahramanyan was elected president of Karabakh on September 9 during an extraordinary session of the NKR national assembly on the issue of presidential elections in Artsakh. By data publication, 23 deputies took part in the closed secret ballot; only one person did not support Shahramanyan’s candidacy.
Samvel Shahramanyan served in the Karabakh Defense Army in the 1990s, then worked in the national security service of the republic. Since March 2023, Shahramanyan became the secretary of the NKR Security Council and took part in negotiations on the Lachin corridor. On August 31, by presidential decree, he was appointed Minister of State of Artsakh. “When choosing Samvel Shahramanyan, I took into account his principles, flexibility, experience in various positions and accumulated knowledge, which are directly related to both national security and public administration,” Harutyunyan said then.
