Russoft called the ban on the import of software for military equipment systems in the Russian Federation belated

The EU ban on the use in the Russian Federation of foreign operating systems (OS) and programming tools that are used in the design of systems for military equipment will accelerate the development of domestic tools, and the measure itself seems belated, declared TASS President of the Association of Russian software developers “Russoft” Valentin Makarov.

According to him, it is clear that sooner or later restrictions had to be applied to operating systems and programming tools. “The goal is to prevent the creation of new, even faster, Russian weapons systems. Since the Russian <...> weapons and air defense systems are already working successfully, these sanctions seem belated,” Makarov said.

The tenth package of EU sanctions, according to the agency, includes a ban on the import into Russia of software and operating systems used, among other things, for the design of military systems. Makarov pointed out that it is difficult to “immediately replace” foreign real-time operating systems and programming tools, and a ban on their supply to the Russian Federation will lead “both to the need for parallel imports and to the accelerated development of our own analogues.”

February 25 European Union put into effect the tenth package of sanctions against Russia, including restrictions on 87 individuals and 34 legal entities. The website of the European Commission (EC) reported that the EU is introducing new export restrictions on dual-use goods and advanced technologies that could help strengthen Russia’s military potential. Among them are electronic components used in weapons systems, as well as a ban on certain rare earth elements and military thermal imaging cameras.
