Russia’s public debt at the beginning of 2023 amounted to 15.1% of GDP. This was stated by Finance Minister Anton Siluanov in an interview with RT.
“We pursued a responsible budgetary policy. This is the budget rule, this is low debt. Our debt at the beginning of this year amounted to 15.1% of GDP,” he said (cit. according to TASS).
According to Siluanov, Russia’s low public debt is an advantage, thanks to which there is “the possibility of maneuver in terms of operations in the financial market, and the possibility of borrowing, financing budget expenditures in the future.”
Earlier today, RIA Novosti, citing data from the Accounts Chamber, reported that the volume of Russia’s external public debt in 2022 decreased for the first time in three years and amounted to 4.049 trillion rubles. against 4.435 trillion rubles. at the end of 2021. At the same time, the volume of domestic public debt at the end of the past year amounted to 0.018 billion rubles.
As Vedomosti wrote earlier, the total amount of Russia’s internal and external public debt for 2022 grew up to 22.8 trillion rubles. from 20.9 trillion at the end of 2021. The cost of servicing it in January-December 2022 amounted to 1.33 trillion rubles, or about 4% of all federal budget spending. According to the law on the federal budget for 2023-2025, the Ministry of Finance expected the public debt at the end of 2022 at the level of 23.4 trillion rubles.
