The external debt of the Russian Federation in the third quarter of 2023 decreased by $13.9 billion (or 4%), reports Bank of Russia. Currently, the external debt amount is $329.5 billion. Since the beginning of 2023, the level of Russia’s external debt has decreased by $54.1 billion, or 14.1%.
“The significant reduction in government debt is due to a decrease in the dollar equivalent of liabilities due to the weakening of the national currency against the US dollar, as well as a decrease in the volume of Russian sovereign securities at the disposal of non-residents, including as a result of their planned repayment,” explained the statement. Central Bank.
The Bank of Russia clarified that the external debt of the banking sector (banks and the Central Bank) decreased in the third quarter by $1.5 billion (or 1.6%). This figure dropped to $92.1 billion; over 9 months it decreased by $2.4 billion, or 2.5%.
