Russian, Turkish and Syrian foreign ministers to meet in Moscow

The foreign ministers of Russia, Syria and Turkey will meet on January 11 in Moscow, Saudi newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat reported. According to her, the meeting of ministers should pave the way for the first ever tripartite talks between the leaders of the countries. In addition to Sergey Lavrov and his Syrian and Turkish counterparts – Faisal Mikdad and Mevlut Cavusoglu – UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan may also take part in the meeting.
Earlier, on January 4, the sheikh visited Damascus, where he held talks with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. In addition, the Saudi edition notes, it is the UAE that intends to provide a platform for the summit of heads of state. If the meeting of the presidents takes place in Moscow, then Abu Dhabi will send its high-ranking representative to it. “The timing of such a meeting is being worked out. The dates have not yet been finalized,” a source in the Russian Foreign Ministry told Vedomosti.
The UN is also interested in such a format of negotiations. According to Asharq Al-Awsat, preparations are already underway in Geneva for a meeting of representatives of Russia, Syria, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates with the UN special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, scheduled for January 23. In addition, Pedersen himself intends to visit Damascus at the end of this month and meet with Syrian Foreign Minister Mikdad. In Geneva, “the UAE intends to reaffirm its position in support of the normalization of relations with Damascus and announce the financing of a number of projects in the electric power industry and other sectors within the framework of UN-authorized international assistance to Syria, which does not violate Western sanctions,” Saudi newspaper sources said.
