Russian Foreign Ministry: the situation in Kosovo is getting out of control

Russia is alarmed by the next stage of escalation in Kosovo and believes that the situation is getting out of control. So the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova commented statement by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic about the need to hold a meeting of the UN Security Council.

“The situation is getting out of control, there is an immediate threat to the existence of the Serb people in Kosovo. The reason is the policy of ethnic cleansing, pogroms, expulsion and terror against the Serbs pursued by the Kosovo Albanian “authorities,” Zakharova said in a comment.

The escalation is taking place against the backdrop of the connivance of the US and the EU, which are busy looking for new ways to put pressure on Belgrade.

“We believe that the initiative of the President of Serbia is timely and in demand. We share his assessment of the current crisis situation,” Zakharova added.

Vucic announced plans to request an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council on July 6. According to him, the situation with the aggravation in Kosovo is out of control, and the Serbian people have been driven into a corner. In this regard, the President spoke about the desire to talk with the head of NATO Jens Stoltenberg “anywhere in the world.”

On May 26, another aggravation took place in the north of Kosovo and Metohija. Protests erupted in several Serb-majority municipalities over the outcome of the last election, which was won by Albanians despite a record low turnout as the local population boycotted the elections.

Serbian protesters demanded the cancellation of the results and the resignation of the heads of municipalities. In response, the Kosovo police fired tear gas and stun grenades in some municipalities. On the same day, the Serbian army was put on full alert and advanced to the administrative border with Kosovo.

The Russian Foreign Ministry condemned the actions of the Kosovo authorities in connection with “new anti-Serb provocations.” The US and EU also criticized Pristina’s actions and called for a de-escalation in the region.
