Russian Foreign Ministry: missile attack on hospital in Gaza could have been avoided

A rocket attack on a hospital in the Gaza Strip could have been avoided if the UN Security Council (SC) had adopted a Russian ceasefire resolution. About it stated at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“If the UN Security Council had adopted the Russian project for a humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip on October 16, then perhaps the tragic missile attack on the Al-Ahly hospital complex, which, according to incoming information, killed over 800 Palestinians, could have been avoided “, the message says.

The Foreign Ministry recalled that only the United States used the right of veto when voting on October 18 on the second draft resolution on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict from Brazil. The consequences of such a decision are “monstrous”, since the conflict could go beyond the borders of the Middle East region, the ministry emphasized.

“<…> In recent years, the Americans have done nothing but methodically “bury” the peace process and the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinians for their own state, promised to them back in 1947. The current US veto on a draft UN Security Council resolution that could help <…> curb violence against civilians in Palestine and Israel, clearly demonstrated Washington’s true aspirations in the region,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The attack on Al-Ahly hospital in the Gaza Strip took place on October 17. According to various sources, the attack killed between 500 and 800 people. The Palestinian side blamed Israeli forces for the strike. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the incident was connected with an unsuccessful rocket launch towards Israel by Islamic Jihad (an organization recognized as terrorist and banned in Russia), also based in Gaza.

Previously, State Duma deputies supported a draft appeal “To the UN and parliaments of the world in connection with the escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict,” which condemned the attack on a hospital in Gaza. Chairman of the lower house of parliament Vyacheslav Volodin proposed that the UN initiate prosecution of US President Joe Biden.
