The Anglo-American School in Moscow (recognized as a foreign agent in Russia) used American curricula that promoted non-traditional values. In response to the demand of the Russian authorities to bring the program in line with the law, the school chose to close. This was announced on Thursday, July 6, by the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Maria Zakharova.
The official pointed out that since the early 1990s, Washington has been trying to extend diplomatic status to an essentially commercial educational structure that has operated in a legal vacuum.
Attempts by the Russian authorities to achieve compliance with Russian legislation from the institution had no effect, therefore, the recognition of this school in its current form as a foreign agent only reflects the actual state of affairs, Zakharova emphasized.
Earlier, the head of the press service of the US State Department, Matthew Miller, said that the United States was protesting against the decision of the Russian authorities to include the Anglo-American School of Moscow in the register of foreign agents. He called this decision blatant and devoid of legal basisth, and described the school itself as an authoritative professional educational institution that is trusted and for decades has guaranteed a high quality of education for both the children of foreign diplomats and Russians.
