Russian Foreign Ministry accuses UNESCO of bias due to condemnation of attack on Lviv

UNESCO statement condemning the attack on Lviv, which affected a historic building in the buffer zone of a world heritage site, is aimed at Western capitals, the organization did not respond to the terrorist attack on the Kremlin, which is also a world heritage site, says in the comments of the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova.
July 6 on the UNESCO website was published a statement in which the organization condemned the explosion in Lviv in the buffer zone of the World Heritage site “Lviv – Historical Center Ensemble”. UNESCO declared a violation of the World Heritage Convention, as well as the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict.
“With its mentoring statement, designed primarily for Western capitals, the secretariat of the organization once again demonstrated a biased and inconsistent approach, a characteristic feature of which is the division of states into “good” and “bad”,” Zakharova said.
She recalled that the terrorist attack against the Moscow Kremlin did not receive a public reaction from the general director of the organization, nor did they condemn the murders of journalist Daria Dugina and military commissar Vladlen Tatarsky.
The institution “sanctions the aggressive neo-Nazi course” of the Kyiv authorities, according to the Foreign Ministry. As for the shelling of Lvov, here the Russian Defense Ministry delivered a “concentrated strike on the points of temporary deployment of the personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and foreign mercenaries”, the Russian army hits “exclusively legal military targets” in Ukraine, Zakharova added.
After the shelling of Lvov, UNESCO also recalled that in March 2022, the director general of the organization, Audrey Azoulay, sent a letter to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov to “remind about obligations” and clarify the coordinates of world heritage sites in Ukraine.
