In the armed forces of the Russian Federation in 2023, they will form a combined arms and air armies and two military districts – Moscow and Leningrad, said Colonel General Yevgeny Burdinsky, Deputy Chief of the General Staff. According to him, an army corps, the Azov naval region, five divisions and 26 brigades will also be formed.
“In 2023, it is necessary to timely provide organizational and staffing support for the formation of combined arms and air armies, an army corps, the Azov naval region, five divisions and 26 brigades, and the creation of the Moscow and Leningrad military districts,” Mr. Burdinsky wrote in an article for the June issue of the magazine Ministry of Defense “Military Commissariats of Russia”.
Since 2023, President Vladimir Putin has increased the size of the Russian armed forces by 137 thousand people, to 2.04 million (1.15 million military personnel). In December 2022, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu proposed increasing the number of servicemen in the Russian army to 1.5 million, including contract servicemen to 695,000. Mr. Putin supported this. The Minister also proposed to increase the draft age from 18–27 to 21–30 years.
