Russia will file a complaint over the attempt to detain a journalist in Cyprus

The Foreign Ministry previously said that on October 5, Cypriot special services tried to detain Rossiyskaya Gazeta correspondent Alexander Gasyuk in Nicosia “using brute force” for subsequent expulsion on charges of “threat to national security.” An embassy employee who was nearby was injured, and Gasyuk himself was arrested with a serious arm injury.
According to the ministry, the Russian correspondent, against whom the Cypriot authorities “used illegal actions,” arrived in Russia this morning, October 7.
“The Russian side will send information to all relevant international organizations about the unacceptable attitude towards journalists that is gaining momentum in NATO countries,” the department said.
The Foreign Ministry previously called the accusations against Gasyuk far-fetched, and the actions of the Cypriot security forces as demonstratively provocative and harsh. After the incident, the Ambassador of Cyprus was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and expressed a categorical protest in connection with the unacceptable and provocative actions of the country’s authorities against Gasyuk and the embassy employee. The Cypriot administration was also demanded to immediately release the Russian correspondent, explain the incident and formally apologize.
