Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzia requested a meeting of the UN Security Council on January 17, arguing that this was the persecution of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

Another reason for convening a meeting of the UN Security Council is the persecution of dissidents in Ukraine. He accused the West of condoning an “authoritarian dictatorship”, which in itself is a significant obstacle to peace.

“Recently, in addition to the persecution of dissidents and opposition leaders, there has been added the desire to destroy the only canonical church in Ukraine, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church,” he said.

Nebenzya said that this could have the most serious consequences. In addition, on January 20, at an informal meeting of the UN Security Council, Russian diplomats are planning about the shelling of Donetsk since 2014 and the life of Donetsk residents.

On December 1, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky put into effect the decision of the National Security Service of Ukraine, which, in fact, banned the UOC. In particular, Zelensky instructed to submit to the Rada a bill on a ban on religious organizations “affiliated with centers of influence in the Russian Federation”, as well as to conduct an examination of the Charter of the UOC for the presence of a church-canonical connection with the Moscow Patriarchate. Mikhail Podolyak, an adviser to the head of the office of the President of Ukraine, said that the era of “two-churchism” is ending in the country, and soon there will be only one Orthodox church in Ukraine, while all ceremonies will be conducted exclusively in Ukrainian.

Earlier, Metropolitan of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church Pavel said that the Kyiv authorities began persecuting the church, and the Assumption Cathedral of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra survived the “outrage”. The former ambassador of the Luhansk People’s Republic in Moscow, Rodion Miroshnik, believes that the Kyiv regime will not stop at expropriating the churches of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church. According to Miroshnyk, priests and parishioners of the UOC are threatened by both persecution and physical danger.
