Russia plans to start supplying grain crops to North Korea in 2023, said Alexander Kozlov, head of the Ministry of Natural Resources and co-chairman of the RF-DPRK intergovernmental commission. According to him, the issue of supplies is currently being discussed between Russian and North Korean companies.
During the meeting of the co-chairs of the RF-DPRK intergovernmental commission, Mr. Kozlov noted that the countries are also considering the prospect of meat trade. “We expect that in the future this will become a significant niche for bilateral trade between Russia and the DPRK,” he added (cited by Interfax).
Commenting on the cooperation between Russia and North Korea in the environmental sphere, Alexander Kozlov expressed hope that in August of this year, consultations will be held between the experts of the two countries within the framework of the Convention on Migratory Birds and work will be completed to agree on the list of their species.
Another important area that Russian and North Korean experts will work on is the conservation of the Amur tiger. “The exchange of modern data on the state of the population in the DPRK will make a significant contribution to the formation of correct statistics for the species. We will be grateful to our Korean colleagues for providing such information,” the head of the Ministry of Natural Resources noted.
In October 2021, according to RIA Novosti, the foreign trade turnover with the DPRK in the Far East amounted to only 20 tons, while in 2020 it was 5.8 thousand tons. At the same time, there was no export of goods from Russia, but from North Korea imported organic chemical compounds (99.2% of the total supply), as well as machinery and mechanisms (0.8%). In October 2022, the head of the Far Eastern Customs Administration, Yuri Ladygin informed about a complete halt in trade between Russia and North Korea through the customs of the Far East. This was due to the sanctions imposed by the UN against Pyongyang.
