The Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Ambassador of Moldova Lilian Darius and announced to him the closure of entry into Russia for a number of officials of the republic. About it reported in the Russian ministry.
Darius was protested “in connection with the unsubstantiated decision of official Chisinau to radically reduce the number of employees of Russian foreign missions in Moldova.” The Russian Foreign Ministry stressed that Chisinau’s decision leads to further destruction of relations with Russia, which are already in a “deep crisis”.
The Russian Foreign Ministry informed Darius that Moscow had taken “asymmetric measures” – a number of officials of the republic were denied entry to Russia.
On July 26, Chisinau decided to reduce the number of staff of the Russian embassy in the republic and announced the expulsion of 45 people. On August 2, Moldovan Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Nikolay Popescu said that Moldova’s decision to reduce the number of staff at the Russian embassy in the republic is a response to Moscow’s policy. Popescu added that the republic had established that some of the employees of the Russian diplomatic mission were allegedly engaged in “destabilizing the situation” in the country.
The Kremlin said that Chisinau deliberately brings relations with Russia “in a very miserable state” and the country’s leadership “cuts all the ropes.” Earlier, the Foreign Ministry said that this decision will affect the residents of both countries, whose ability to receive timely consular assistance, as well as maintain business and cultural ties, will be significantly reduced.
