DECRYPTION – After having interrupted its sales to the French Engie, Gazprom interrupts the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline.
Vladimir Putin has further tightened the valves of his gas pipelines. “Russia uses gas as a weapon of war”, denounced Tuesday the French Minister for the Ecological Transition, Agnès Pannier-Runacher. The master of the Kremlin has been excelling in its handling for twenty years. And a year that he uses it in an offensive, cleverly planned, according to several observers.
Latest salvo, Gazprom halted deliveries on Wednesday via the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline, which serves Western Europe via Germany. Reason given: three days of maintenance until September 2. Analysts from Rystad Energy are wondering about a restart on the announced date. Nord Stream 1, the gas pipeline that passes through the Baltic, has a capacity of 55 billion cubic meters (Bn/m3) per year, i.e. 16% of imports from the European Union in 2021. Since July, Nord Stream 1 has only been operating at 20% of its capacity.
