Russia denounced the Criminal Law Convention on Corruption and Treaties of the Council of Europe

On March 16, 2022, Russia withdrew from the Council of Europe (CE). At the same time, according to the statements of the Russian authorities, 21 international treaties, which Russia ratified after joining the Council of Europe, ceased to operate. Among them are the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, the European Convention for the Suppression of Terrorism, the European Charter of Local Self-Government, the European Social Charter.
January 9 Vladimir Putin introduced to the State Duma a draft law on the denunciation of the convention on responsibility for corruption. On February 15, the document was approved in the State Duma, on February 22 – in the Federation Council. In the Kremlin spokethat the denunciation of the convention will not affect the fight against corruption within the country.
