Lavrov said that Russia is in favor of expanding the UN Security Council at the expense of the countries of Asia and Africa
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said during a briefing that our country will insist on expanding the UN Security Council to include the countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America.
He called bringing the status of the main UN bodies in line with modern realities an important task, referring to the reform of the Security Council. The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry noted the disproportionate composition of the UN Security Council, when “out of 15 members, the so-called golden billion occupies 6 seats.” The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia considers the current situation dishonest and unfair.
The Security Council is a permanent body of the United Nations, which is entrusted with the main responsibility for maintaining international peace and security. The UN Security Council consists of 15 member states – 5 permanent and 10 non-permanent. Appropriate amendments to the UN Charter were made in 1963.
