Russia blocked UN Security Council resolution on sanctions against Mali

At a meeting of the UN Security Council, Russia vetoed a resolution on sanctions against Mali, RIA Novosti reported.
The initiators of the resolution were France and the United Arab Emirates. It provides for a one-year extension of sanctions against this African country. At the same time, the resolution was supported by all other members of the UN Security Council, with the exception of China, which abstained.
The draft resolution proposed to extend for a year the sanctions imposed back in 2017, as well as to extend until September 30, 2024 the operation of the group of experts of the UN Security Council Sanctions Committee, which monitors how the sanctions are implemented, and also determines which persons to include in the sanctions list .
The sanctions regime against Mali includes an asset freeze and a travel ban on those who, in the opinion of the panel of experts, are obstructing the implementation of the 2015 peace agreement.
At the same time, the Russian version of the resolution was also blocked, which proposed extending the sanctions until August 31, 2024 “for the final period”, as well as stopping the work of the “group of experts” of the sanctions committee.
