Russia supported Egypt’s application to join the BRICS interstate association, Russian Ambassador to Cairo Georgy Borisenko said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
“Russia immediately supported the request (application) of Egypt to join the BRICS. It can take place after the criteria and procedures for admitting new countries are finally agreed upon within the association, since the current members have different opinions on this matter,” said he (quote from “Prime”).
Joining the BRICS “will open wide political and economic opportunities for the Egyptians, including increasing their weight in world affairs and participating in the creation of alternative settlement mechanisms instead of unreliable dollars,” the Russian ambassador said. Borisenko added that at the end of 2021, with Russian support, Cairo was accepted as a shareholder of the BRICS New Development Bank.
The fact that Egypt applied to join the BRICS, today informed Borisenko. Now the BRICS includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
Earlier, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro following a meeting with his Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva declaredthat the country would like to become part of the BRICS. He emphasized that this association is transforming into “a great magnet for those who want a different world and cooperation.” In turn, da Silva declared, which looks favorably on the possibility of Venezuela joining the BRICS. The Brazilian President added that such initiatives should be agreed with all participating countries.
