Russia appreciates UNESCO’s intentions to “protect” Ukrainian borscht

UNESCO’s decision to include borscht in the list of intangible heritage that needs urgent protection is stupidity, said Grigory Ordzhonikidze, Executive Secretary of the Russian Commission for UNESCO.
UNESCO is a specialized agency of the United Nations for education, science and culture, which includes attractions in the World Heritage List. In July, the organization included “Ukrainian borscht” in the UNESCO list of intangible heritage in need of urgent protection in the context of the conflict. At the same time, the body recognized that borscht is a national dish of other countries as well.
Ordzhonikidze said that people in Russia love and respect borscht, and pay tribute to its merits and taste. At the same time, attributing it to Ukrainian culture, and especially attempts to defend it, does not honor UNESCO.
The diplomat recalled that in addition to Ukrainian, there are also Moscow, Belarusian and Polish borscht, and the situation with the inclusion of borscht in the UNESCO list is simply anecdotal.
“In their anti-Russian frenzy, Ukrainians and the West have lost all connection with reality. Without exception, all UNESCO programs and mechanisms are used to promote the anti-Russian agenda,” he said.
