Russia and China voted against the US resolution on the conflict in the Middle East proposed by the United Nations Security Council. reported at the UN.

The American draft resolution was supported by 10 countries, three opposed. Two delegations abstained from voting.

“Thus, the resolution was not adopted due to the veto by the permanent members of the Security Council,” the statement said.

The Russian delegation also proposed its own version of the resolution, already the second, but the document did not receive a sufficient number of votes. In particular, Moscow’s version was supported by four countries, and two voted against. A further nine delegations abstained from voting.

The UN notes that new draft resolutions proposed by Russia and the United States condemn violence and call for the delivery of humanitarian aid. At the same time, Russia calls for “an immediate, sustainable and fully respected ceasefire on humanitarian grounds.” Moscow also demands that Israel cancel the call on the population of Gaza to move to the southern regions of the enclave.

The US draft emphasizes the right of any country to self-defense. It also proposes to declare “humanitarian pauses.” As the UN clarified, the American version does not contain a call for a ceasefire.

The UN Security Council is working on a resolution on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict after the attack by the Palestinian group Hamas. Previously, Moscow presented its first version of the resolution, but on October 9, at a meeting, France, Great Britain, Japan and the United States spoke out against the Russian draft resolution calling for a ceasefire. Another six states abstained. Brazil also proposed a draft resolution, but the United States vetoed it because the document did not mention Israel’s right to self-defense.

On October 7, Hamas attacked Israel. Against the backdrop of a militant attack, the Israeli Defense Forces launched Operation Iron Swords, and the country went into a state of war. As a result of the fighting, according to the latest data, about 6,500 people were killed, including more than 5,000 residents of the Gaza Strip.
