Russia and China criticized the US-led “Summit for Democracy”

The foreign ministries of Russia and China criticized the holding of an international “summit for democracy” in the United States on March 28-30. Washington, through such events, is trying, Zakharova noted, to legitimize the American instruments of external control and interference in the internal affairs of other countries. Another goal of the “Summit for Democracy” is to form an ideological platform for the fight against “autocracies”, to which Washington refers Russia and China, the Foreign Ministry believes.
Zakharova also expressed regret that UN Secretary General António Guterres would also take part in this “unworthy performance”.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry, in turn, said that the “summit for democracy” provokes a split in the world.
“The United States is ignoring its own many shortcomings and is once again hosting the so-called ‘Democracy Summit’ under the banner of ostensibly democracy, openly pursuing ideological lines, provoking a division in the world, and defiling and trampling on the spirit of democracy,” said Mao Ning, a spokeswoman for the department.quote according to RIA Novosti).
According to Beijing, the world community needs to strengthen solidarity and cooperation, and not “create divisions in the name of democracy.”
The last “Summit for Democracy” took place in December 2021. Then Moscow and Beijing also criticized this event. A month before the summit, the ambassadors of Russia and China published joint article in the National Interest, which stated that democracy is a universal right of all peoples, and not the prerogative of individual countries.
