Member of Japan’s ruling party arrested in kickback case
A deputy from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party in Japan, Yoshitaku Ikeda, was arrested in a kickback case, RIA Novosti reports, citing a story from the NHK TV channel.
The arrest was reportedly made by a special department of the Tokyo Prosecutor’s Office. The deputy is suspected of receiving kickbacks from the party treasury in the amount equivalent to $331 thousand.
An investigation into the concealment of funds received by factions of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party is ongoing. In particular, unaccounted receipts are being investigated; several dozen people are involved in the case, who received amounts of hundreds of thousands of US dollars.
Representatives of the Japanese ruling elite have already been interrogated, many of them have lost their positions in the government. Four ministers, six deputy ministers and several representatives of the leadership of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party of Japan were dismissed. Officials continue to testify and the investigation continues.
