During testing, the “Obereg” body armor withstood a bullet that it was not designed to withstand. The capabilities of the protective equipment were demonstrated in the Rostec project “Our Crash”, the release of which published in the Telegram channel of the state corporation.
The body armor was shot from a distance of 15 m with 338 LM ammunition measuring 8.6×70 mm. At the same time, the “Obereg” is designed to hit a smaller B-32 armor-piercing bullet – 7.62×54 mm. As a result of the test, the plate did not receive a through hole. The body armor also successfully withstood shots from 7.62×39 mm and 7.62×54 mm ammunition.
In the video, the state corporation not only tested the Russian body armor, but also compared it with its Chinese and American counterparts. All body armor belongs to the Br5 protection class. The Chinese-made bulletproof vest withstood shooting with a 7.62×39 mm cartridge, but when tested with an 8.6×70 mm bullet, an impact dent formed on the back side of the plate, which would have caused fatal injuries to a person. The American body armor could not withstand fire from 7.62×39 mm ammunition.
In April 2023, the Tula Oktava plant (RT-Capital includes Rostec) launched production of bulletproof vests “Obereg”. Now the enterprise is capable of producing up to 2,000 body armor per quarter, the state corporation plans to increase production to 7,500 products.
The body armor is made of Cordura 1000D nylon woven material with water-repellent impregnation and a polyurethane coating. When fully equipped with side protection, an armored apron, throat protection, shoulder protection and a plate on the back, the protective equipment weighs 11.5 kg, Pavel Pavlenko, director of the Octava company, specified during the test. As Rostec noted, the arrangement of the plates made it possible to protect vital organs while maintaining mobility.
Pavlenko said that the company is now developing a lighter version of “Obereg”, which will weigh about 10 kg. He emphasized that the body armor will not be inferior in reliability to the basic version.
