The international news agency Rossiya Segodnya has filed an application for registration of the Ekho Moskvy brand. This should from Rospatent data.

The application was submitted on August 2. The brand name and logo are identical to those owned by the radio station. Rossiya Segodnya is headed by journalists Margarita Simonyan and Dmitry Kiselev.

Former editor-in-chief of the radio station Alexei Venediktov (recognized as a foreign agent) explained publication Sota that the registration of the Ekho Moskvy brand cannot be carried out by law, since it “belongs to ZAO Ekho Moskvy, which exists and where minority shareholders control 33.5%.”

In his comment, which Venediktov posted on Telegram, he stated that “it’s like rewriting a history textbook – ‘strengthen the past’.”

In March 2022, Ekho Moskvy was taken off the air in Russia, and the radio station’s website was blocked. On March 3, the board of directors decided to liquidate the radio and the website. The Gazprom-Media holding, which owned the radio station, said that the basis for the liquidation was the appeal of the Prosecutor General’s Office, which accused it of spreading fakes about the actions of the Russian army during the military operation in Ukraine.

On March 5 of the same year, the board of directors terminated the employment contract with the editor-in-chief of the radio station Venediktov ahead of schedule. In autumn, the former editor-in-chief told about the creation of a new media platform, which will collect all the materials of the former journalists of Ekho Moskvy.
