Rosselkhoznadzor may limit supplies of fish and seafood from Japan

Rosselkhoznadzor is thinking about limiting the supply of aquatic products from Japan to Russia due to the risks of radiation contamination of fish and seafood. About it reported press service of the department.
“Currently, the volume of exports of fish products from Japan to Russia is insignificant. For the entire 2022, 190 tons were delivered. This year, as of September 22, only 118 tons were imported into Russia. At the same time, Russian vessels in the area bordering Japanese waters catch a significant amount of fish,” explained Rosselkhoznadzor.
The department plans to hold negotiations with the Japanese veterinary service. Rosselkhoznadzor also expects to receive from the republic, by October 16, data on the methods that the country uses for radiological testing of exported fish products, including the content of the radioactive hydrogen isotope – tritium. The final decision on supplies to Russia will be made based on the results of negotiations.
Rosselkhoznadzor also noted that in the Russian Federation there are currently no approved methods for determining tritium in aquatic products. The department called on the FMBA, the Federal Medical Biophysical Center and the Emergency Technical Center of the Russian Ministry of Atomic Energy to develop such technology.
Japan started the release of more than a million tons of purified water from the destroyed Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean on August 24 with the permission of the IAEA. It is expected that this process could last decades. The community of local fishermen spoke out against the dumping – they went to court as a group of more than 150 people.
