Rosselkhoznadzor has restricted the import into Russia of carnations grown in Ecuador from the Netherlands, Germany, Latvia and Lithuania, reported press service of the department. The Rosselkhoznadzor report notes that the departments of these countries have been sent requests to stop certifying Ecuadorian carnations as of February 9.
The decision to limit imports in Rosselkhoznadzor was explained by concerns related to the spread of Californian flower thrips. The department’s statement says that during the supply of flowers, cases of violation of phytosanitary requirements of the EAEU have become more frequent. According to Rosselkhoznadzor, it is in the flower products of Ecuador that the largest amount of flower thrips has been identified.
California flower thrips is an insect included in the list of quarantine objects. It damages 244 plant species from 62 families. Thanks to the trade in plant crops, it spread from North America to Eurasia, New Zealand, Africa, Australia and South America. It was first recorded in Russia in the late 1980s. In the absence of control measures, it causes 100% crop loss.
Previously Rosselkhoznadzor limited import of bananas from Ecuador to Russia. This decision was also explained by cases of detection of a quarantine object—the polyphagous humpback fly—in Ecuadorian products. Rosselkhoznadzor sent an appeal to the head of the Ecuadorian Ministry of Agriculture, Franklin Danilo Palacios Marquez, with a request to stop certifying bananas from five Ecuadorian exporters as of February 5.
The polyphagous humpback fly is an insect that lives in organic remains of both plant and animal origin. During long-term storage, it contaminates food, in particular vegetables, fruits, mushrooms, dried fish, etc.
