Rospotrebnadzor estimated damage from coronavirus in 2022 at 1.6 trillion rubles

The total economic damage suffered by the Russian economy in 2022 as a result of the spread of COVID-19 could amount to 1.6 trillion rubles. About it says in the report of Rospotrebnadzor.

The damage consists of direct medical costs and indirect losses to the economy. As noted in the report, organizations are counting according to different methods, so the damage in the first case can be estimated from 760 million to 1.35 trillion rubles. The department decided to stop at the average value – 1.1 trillion rubles.

With regard to indirect losses, the assessment is carried out according to two parameters – the loss of working time during illness and the loss of years of life due to death. “Given the significant number of deaths from COVID-19 in 2022, a preliminary assessment of only one component – ​​“years of life lost in case of death” – can be determined in the amount of at least 500 million rubles. Thus, the total economic damage to the Russian Federation from COVID-19 in 2022 amounted to at least 1.6 trillion rubles,” Rospotrebnadzor noted.

Russia’s economic losses from the coronavirus could have been higher, but since measures were taken to use test systems for the disease and establish subsequent quarantine measures, the damage was reduced, the report specifies.

In early May, WHO canceled the status of the global COVID-19 pandemic, which was announced in 2020. Since then, according to the organization, about 20 million people have died from coronavirus, while the official number of deaths is about 7 million people.
