On October 26, a Ukrainian drone entered the spent nuclear fuel storage facility (ISF) at the Kursk NPP, a Rosatom representative clarified to Vedomosti.

According to a representative of the state corporation, the Ukrainian attack on the ISFSF and its consequences are not classified according to the International Nuclear Event Scale (INES) of the IAEA. “As a result of the drone attack, the wall of the spent fuel storage facility was damaged,” he clarified.

ISFSF is a facility on the territory of a nuclear power plant in which fuel assemblies are kept after their use in the reactor. Spent fuel remains highly radioactive for several years.

On October 28, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the Ukrainian Armed Forces attacked the Kursk nuclear power plant with three drones, as a result of which “the walls of the nuclear waste warehouse were damaged.” Two more drones fell on the station’s administrative building complex.

On October 26, the Ministry of Defense announced the interception of a Ukrainian Armed Forces drone in the Kursk region. It was reported that he was shot down near the village of Kurchatov, where the station is located. The attack was later confirmed by the press service of the nuclear power plant, adding that three drones were intercepted.
