Rogov: the installation of a protective dome has begun at the Zaporozhye NPP

At the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), a protective dome is being installed over the storage of spent nuclear waste, informed on Saturday, Vladimir Rogov, a member of the main council of the administration of the Zaporozhye region, citing Olga Kurlaeva, a special correspondent of the All-Russian State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company, who published a video of the installation of the dome.

“So far, he will save from fragments and SVU (improvised explosive devices – Approx. ed.) from drones. In the future it will be more serious, ”wrote Rogov.

Russia has controlled the ZNPP since the end of February. In early October, after the Zaporozhye region became part of Russia, Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed to take the plant facilities into federal ownership and create the Zaporozhye NPP FSUE to ensure the safety of nuclear facilities.

On November 17, the Board of Governors of the IAEA adopted a resolution calling on Russia to abandon its claims to the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant and withdraw all military and civilian personnel from its territory. The agency believes that Ukraine should gain control over the facility. The Kremlin said that despite the resolution, Moscow will continue to cooperate with the agency.

Moscow and Kyiv have repeatedly accused each other of shelling the station. The head of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, called for an immediate end to the shelling of the station and stepped up contacts with the Russian and Ukrainian sides in order to agree on the creation of a safe zone around the ZNPP. Earlier this week, he said that the agency and the Ukrainian side made progress in negotiations for a security zone around the station. The parties also agreed that the IAEA will ensure the permanent presence of its experts at all nuclear power plants in Ukraine to minimize the risks of a nuclear accident amid hostilities.
