The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) left the first line of defense in the Zaporozhye region, retreating to previously prepared positions, informed Vladimir Rogov, member of the main council of the regional administration, in a commentary to RIA Novosti.

“Ukrainian troops left the first line of defense almost everywhere and moved to ready positions on the second and third lines,” he said.

According to him, Russian forces took under fire or operational control nine settlements in the Zaporozhye direction, which made it possible to achieve a more advantageous tactical and strategic position. The plans of the Ukrainian side to launch an offensive on this section of the line of contact “have been thwarted for a while,” Rogov added.

On January 20, Rogov reported that the intensity of hostilities had sharply increased in the Zaporozhye direction, the Russian army had launched a local offensive. January 17 Rogov informedthat the Ukrainian troops, which until recently were preparing for an offensive in the Zaporozhye region, changed tactics, starting to build fortifications in the part of the region they control. At the same time, on January 9, the official arguedthat the Armed Forces of Ukraine are preparing to cross the Dnieper in the area of the Kakhovka reservoir in order to approach the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant or Energodar.
